As summer seasons conclude, fall ball will begin! Fall ball is a great opportunity to get accustomed to wooden bats. Whether you are just starting out with wood, or planning to play in college or pro ball, wooden bats only make you a better hitter. Fall ball is meant for adjustments, you played your big games this summer now it is time to get to work!
While everyone on my fall ball team used metal bats, I was the one who used wood. "Everyone is using metal, why don't you?", "Don't you care about your batting average?", "You will not hit the ball as far". These were statements I heard on a very successful travel team. Truth be told, I simply did not care about any of those things...I was worried about being CONSISTENT! Scouts do not care who you are, how strong you are, how fast the ball comes off your bat, they care about your consistency. I knew that if I could square up a ball consistently with wood, I would not have a problem with metal. Now mind you, this fall ball season was extremely important for me, it was my junior year and this was prime time to commit to a college. I was playing just as good, if not better than a few of the Big 10 commits on my team and got the attention of every school I wanted to visit...long story short my grades were not up to par for these schools so I went to Juco and eventually wound up at at the division 1 level, but that will be another blog post where I talk about how important grades are!
Using those wood bats that fall helped my career tremendously. Not only did I learn how to square up the ball (which led to a .400 BA in the spring), but I increased my skill level. From that fall alone I went from 97 off the tee to hitting 101 off the tee.
Whether you want to use wood in your fall season is completely up to you, but I highly recommend it! Also, I used blems that whole fall!
